I think its clear Nokia and other handset makers already have or are rolling out handsets that operate on not just 4 but 5 bands such as the Nokia 6500 slide 800/900/1800/1900/2100

Thanks Martin your your comments. Yes hopefully the handset manufacturers will develop more quad-band phones. However I wonder if they will keep quad-band phones to the high-end of the market -- to keep competition alive here NZ will need to have quad-band phones at the lower end of the market as well.

That Nokia phone you mention would work fine on both networks -- however it would not be able to roam in Australia on Telstra UMTS 850. Hopefully future phones from Nokia will include UMTS 850 as well as the other frequencies.

It might not be as bad for them over the mid and long term as it looks now. Quad Band GSM/EDGE and 2100 UMTS phones are now appearing on the market. Take the N95 for example (specs here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4344017)

The N95 would thus work in the Vodafone network, 900 MHz for GSM/GPRS/(EDGE if they have it) and 2100 UMTS. In the Telecom network it would work in the 850 MHz band for GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 2100 UMTS.

Cheers,
Martin
